Free Paint Calculator — All Cities

Calculate gallons of interior paint, exterior paint, or primer for your project. Select your city for local climate tips and code requirements.

Paint calculation is deceptively tricky. You need wall area (perimeter times height), minus doors and windows, times the number of coats, divided by coverage per gallon — which varies based on surface texture, paint quality, and application method. Getting it wrong means either leftover custom-tinted paint you cannot return, or a mid-project store run hoping the remix matches your dye lot.

Interior wall paint covers approximately 350 sq ft per gallon on smooth surfaces, dropping to 280–300 sq ft on textured walls. Exterior paint covers about 300 sq ft per gallon due to rougher surfaces. Primer covers 300 sq ft per gallon. Two coats is the standard for any color change — one coat only works for same-color refreshes or when using paint-and-primer products.

Pricing spans a wide range: basic flat paint (Glidden, ColorPlace) runs $22 per gallon, mid-range eggshell (Behr, PPG) averages $45, and premium paint (Benjamin Moore Regal, Farrow & Ball) reaches $85 per gallon. The actual cost difference per room is often under $50 between budget and premium — making premium paint one of the best value upgrades in home renovation.

Paint Calculator by City

Los Angeles, CA

Only low-VOC paints are sold in LA (SCAQMD Rule 1113). Intense UV means exterior repaints every 5–7 years. Choose fade-resistant formulas.

Chicago, IL

Exterior paint window is April–October only. Interior painting is a strong winter project. Use freeze-thaw rated acrylic latex for exteriors.

Houston, TX

Mildewcide-infused paint is strongly recommended due to 70–90% RH year-round. Satin and semi-gloss finishes resist mold better than flat.

Phoenix, AZ

UV intensity at Phoenix's elevation degrades exterior paint fast — expect repainting every 5–7 years. Use light colors with high solar reflectance.

Philadelphia, PA

Lead paint testing is mandatory in pre-1978 homes before any paint disturbance — PA has strict lead abatement requirements.

San Antonio, TX

Stucco walls are common and reduce coverage by 15–20% per gallon. Earth tones and warm neutrals dominate San Antonio's palette.

San Diego, CA

Paint year-round in San Diego's mild climate. UV-resistant pigments are important — 266 sunny days per year fades dark exterior colors fast.

Dallas, TX

Choose acrylic latex with flex properties — Dallas surfaces see 130°F+ temp range between winter lows and summer sun-exposed surfaces.

Austin, TX

Austin's palette trends toward warm whites, sage greens, and earth tones. Cedar fever season (Dec–Feb) means seal windows during interior painting.

Seattle, WA

Mildew-resistant exterior formulas are essential with 150+ rain days per year. Interior painting is ideal year-round in Seattle's stable indoor climate.

Denver, CO

UV is 25% stronger at altitude — exterior paint fades in 6–8 years vs. 10+ at sea level. Use premium UV-inhibitor formulas for exteriors.

Boston, MA

Massachusetts has the strictest lead paint laws in the US. Pre-1978 homes require licensed lead-safe work practices for any paint disturbance.

Miami, FL

100% acrylic with fungicide is essential in Miami's tropical humidity. Salt air corrodes cheap paint — use marine-grade for coastal exteriors.

Atlanta, GA

Moderate climate gives 8–10 year exterior paint life. Summer thunderstorms mean checking the forecast before exterior work every afternoon.

Minneapolis, MN

Only premium acrylic latex survives -20°F winters. Exterior painting season is May–September. Interior work gets winter contractor discounts.
