Free Tile Calculator — All Cities

Calculate exact boxes of floor tile, subway tile, or mosaic sheets for your project. Select your city for local material preferences and code requirements.

Tile installation requires more precise material estimation than most renovation projects because cuts and breakage waste is higher, and dye lot matching between purchases is critical. The three most common residential tile types — floor tile (12x12), subway tile (3x6), and mosaic sheets — each come in different box sizes with different coverage per box.

Standard 12x12 floor tile covers 15 sq ft per box and ranges from $15 (basic ceramic) to $90 (porcelain or natural stone). Subway tile at 3x6 covers 10 sq ft per box at $10–$60. Mosaic sheets cover 1 sq ft each (12x12 mesh-mounted) at $5–$35 per sheet. The waste factor matters more for tile than other materials — use 10% for straight layouts and 15% for patterns, diagonal cuts, or areas with many corners.

Beyond the tile itself, budget for thinset mortar (about 50 lbs per 50 sq ft), grout (roughly 25 lbs per 50 sq ft of floor tile), and spacers. These ancillary costs add $1–$3 per square foot. For wet areas, add a waterproofing membrane like RedGard at $30–$40 per pail (covering 55 sq ft).

Tile Calculator by City

Los Angeles, CA

Large-format porcelain (24x48) is trending in LA bathrooms. Low-VOC thinset is required under SCAQMD regulations.

Chicago, IL

Heated floor systems (Ditra-Heat) are commonly paired with bathroom tile due to brutal winters. Acclimate thinset to room temp.

Houston, TX

Porcelain tile is the top ground-floor choice post-Hurricane Harvey — fully waterproof and easy to clean after water events.

Phoenix, AZ

Tile covers 60%+ of Phoenix homes — stays cool underfoot in 115°F summers. Large-format porcelain is the current favorite.

Philadelphia, PA

Subway tile complements Philly's century-old row home aesthetic. Hexagonal floor tile is popular in historic bathroom restorations.

San Antonio, TX

Saltillo and Talavera tile reflect San Antonio's Southwestern heritage. Imported Mexican tile is widely available and affordable.

San Diego, CA

Indoor-outdoor tile continuity is a strong SD design trend — same porcelain from kitchen through patio. Slip-rated for wet coastal air.

Dallas, TX

Large-format tile (12x24, 24x24) is popular for open-concept Dallas living areas. Foundation movement makes floating layouts smart.

Austin, TX

Cement-look porcelain and industrial-style tile suit Austin's eclectic/modern aesthetic. Mid-century ranch homes are the primary market.

Seattle, WA

Matte-finish porcelain and natural stone suit Seattle bathrooms. Waterproof underlayment is essential in the Pacific Northwest.

Denver, CO

Heated tile floors are increasingly popular in Denver bathrooms. Dry air means grout cures faster — seal within 48 hours.

Boston, MA

Subway tile is perennial in Boston kitchens — fits the classic New England aesthetic. Pre-1978 homes need lead paint testing first.

Miami, FL

Polished porcelain dominates modern Miami condos. Over 70% of Miami homes have tile floors — humidity makes it the obvious choice.

Atlanta, GA

Traditional subway and hexagonal patterns suit Atlanta's bungalow and craftsman homes. Waterproofing is critical over red clay soil.

Minneapolis, MN

Heated floor mats under bathroom tile are near-essential in Minneapolis winters. Tile acclimation is quick in consistently heated homes.
